Free Floating Pond Weeds

Free-floating surface plants derive their nutrient needs directly from the water. They are not attached to the bottom. Common types are Duckweed, Watermeal (Wolffia), Star Duckweed and Water Hyacinth. These plants reproduce throughout the growing season. Whole pond treatment is recommended for thorough and longer-term control. Free-floating plants can quickly cover an entire pond.

Common Free-Floating Pond Weeds:

Common Duckweed
Common Duckweed is an oval or rounded shape plant that floats on the surface. It has a minute root that hangs beneath. More Information
Our #1 Recommendation - Alligare Fluridone (White Cap) or Sonar aquatic herbicide
For small water feature ponds see Weedtrine-D
Giant Duckweed
Giant Duckweed is very similar except has multiple roots and the underside is usually red. Typically found in ponds. More Information
Our #1 Recommendation - Alligare Fluridone (White Cap) or Sonar aquatic herbicide
Watermeal
Watermeal appears as minute green grains floating on the water. This one is often mistaken for algae or fine seeds. More Information
Our #1 Recommendation - Clipper or Alligare Fluridone (White Cap) or Sonar aquatic herbicide
TIP: In ponds with constant flow Sonar may not have sufficient contact time to control certain plants. Reward herbicide is absorbed quickly by plants and will be a good alternative in a high turn-over flow situation.
