Common Duckweed

Duckweed is a free-floating plant that can easily cover an entire pond. It appears as a single leaf or a cluster of three leaves with very fine roots that hang down from the underside. Imagine miniature one, two or three leaf clover about the size of a pencil eraser; sometimes smaller sometimes larger.

Q. What are the best control options?

A. Herbicide Application:
We strongly recommend two herbicide types for Duckweed control -
  1) White Cap
  2) Sonar
  3) Reward
  4) Weedtrine-D (For decorative/ornamental ponds)

Q. Which herbicide when?

Sonar: This is a great control agent; we use it daily in our infield service division. Sonar is broad spectrum, it controls most submerged plants as well as Duckweed. Sonar does require a long contact period of at least two weeks. For that reason it should not be used in ponds with significant out flow unless you can sequester the water. A bit of water exchange or an average rain event won’t hurt but if there is constant out flow do not use Sonar. Use the liquid formulation of Sonar for Duckweed control. Sonar can take three to six plus weeks to achieve control but, Sonar offers a high level of control and the longest term of control sometimes lasting a full season.

Remember: We are always available to help solve your aquatic problems.

Reward: Quick control action is one of its best attributes. Reward is absorbed quickly by Duckweed and control is typically achieved within two weeks. Attempt to contact as much duckweed as possible when applying using a hand held or backpack sprayer. At higher label rates Reward is also very effective against most submerged weeds. Control is typically achieved within two weeks.

Q. When is the best time to treat?

A. Never treat before the Duckweed is present. If the Duckweed is viable it will respond to treatment.

Q. How do I actually apply the product(s)?

A. Apply Sonar or Reward with a hand held or Solo Backpack sprayers. Mix Reward or Sonar with enough water to help facilitate distribution around the pond. It is not important with Sonar to contact all the Duckweed just get it in the water, its long contact time will take care of even distribution. Contacting as much Duckweed as possible enhances reward applications.

A Great Tip: Back pack sprayers cost more but they hold more product, get the job done faster, spray farther and are much easier to use than carrying a hand held sprayer that are awkwardly carried and require frequent stooping, filling and pumping. Once you use a back pack sprayer there is no going back – You can use it for all your yard weed control and fertilizer applications or use it to apply Flight Control goose repellent.

Note: Always triple rinse spray tanks after each use! Make sure rinsate is applied to the treatment site!

Q. How often do I need to treat Duckweed?

A. Many factors determine regrowth when it comes to Duckweed. On average, treating one to three times within a season is common depending upon product choice and environmental factors. With our professional products and twenty-five plus years of experience we’ll help you achieve the results you desire.
